Following its recent successful launches in Uganda and Ghana,Africa’s biggest online shopping platform Jumia has launched in Cameroon, the company announced, saying the launch is the beginning of plans to expand across central Africa.
The online retailer said now is the ideal time for Jumia to establish itself in Cameroon, given the country’s strong purchasing power, increasing interest in consumer goods, and the growth in mobile internet penetration.
“This is another exciting step for Jumia. We are confident that Cameroonians will embrace the opportunity to shop easily and conveniently online, and are committed to maintaining our high standards of security, great value and fantastic service as we continue to expand across the continent,” said Christina Hawley, managing director for new countries at Jumia.
It’s major competition, Konga in Nigeria has not planned to expand yet mainly because the Nigerian market, with over 170 million people and over 50 million online, is yet to be covered. Meeting needs of shoppers in Nigeria seems to be Konga’s priority but we cannot say the firm doesn’t want to invest as earlier it had said it would take Rocket Internet to court for allegedlly domain squatting. Ironically, both e-commerce firm have roots in the Swiss fund Kinnevik, which backs Rocket Internet and is also an investor in Konga and in Millicom as well. Naspers bought a majority stake in Konga.
Initially launched in Nigeria in 2012, the expansion to Cameroon brings the number of countries in which Jumia operates to nine, including Ivory Coast, Egypt, Morocco, Kenya, Ghana and Uganda, as well as launching a site in the UK. With its own warehouses and delivery teams, as well as a variety of payment options including cash on delivery, credit card and mobile money, it has adapted the global megatrend for African consumers and won the trust of a large and constantly growing customer base.
