Lily Born’s grandfather suffers from Parkinson’s disease and as a result, he often accidentally knocks objects off from flat surfaces. To help her beloved grandfather, this bright 11-year-old came up with the idea to make a sturdy cup that her grandfather could use without spilling.
A few years ago, Lily, the daughter of an inventor, noticed that her grandfather, who has Parkinson’s, had been spilling his drinks. She decided to help him out by creating a more stable cup, which she named the Kangaroo Cup.
Lily created the first Kangaroo Cup by attaching moldable prototyping plastic legs to the bottom of her grandfather’s cup. A year later, Lily, with the help of her family, launched a project on Kickstarter to fund the production of ceramic Kangaroo Cups that they could distribute.
This ceramic tumbler had three legs of moldable plastic attached, so it’s harder to knock over than your typical cup.
That project was successfully funded but Lily and her family realised the cup needed a bit of tweaking, so they’ve launched another project to fund the production of plastic Kangaroo Cups that are comfortable and less easy to break. The plastic Kangaroo Cup weighs only 255 grams, is microwave and dishwasher safe, break-resistant, stain-resistant & BPA-free. The project is doing well on Kickstarter, with $15 162 of the $25 000 goal raised so far and 32 days left until funding closes.
“Just because you’re a kid, doesn’t mean you can’t do big and great things,” Lily says and she is definitely proof of that saying.
While most 11-year-olds are watching Hunger Games or doing other typically pre-teen things, Lily Born, of Chicago, is busy designing unbreakable, un-spillable kitchenware to help people with Parkinson’s disease.
The young entrepreneur is now selling her product on Kickstarter. Sets of four Kangaroo Cups are available for $25 on Kickstarter 🙂
