The brick walls are there for a reason. The brick walls are not there to keep us out. The brick walls are there to give us a chance to show how badly we want something. Because the brick walls are there to stop the people who don’t want it badly enough. They’re there to stop the other people.
Welcome to my blog, the OLAMOSH Meet Bloggers Interview series continue this week with a very young interesting man who have chosen to break the barrier of slow & expensive internet connection in Africa and go ahead to do what he loves doing, which is VIDEO BLOGGING.
If you live in West Africa, you will understand how expensive, stressful and challenging it is to upload or stream video on the internet. I also love to do video blogging but the cost of internet data is too much for me to handle, aside other expenses like digital camera, microphone and so on
Your only barriers are what you let it be
Most of us see cost of Internet connection as a barrier to video blogging, but this young man see it as just a weak walls without foundations. He broke through the barriers of the skies and operate several youtube channels that generate hundred of $$$ monthly.
I will want you to feel relax and enjoy this interesting interview chat with Chuks Ineh of adentan.com & chuksineh.com . If possible, urge you to grab a cup of tea or coffee as you already know that the interview series on this blog are always LONG!! Here We Go!!!!
Please tell us a little bit about yourself?
I am Chuks Ineh, I am social and fun to be with. I am a professional photographer, a serial entrepreneur, a video blogger, comedian and environmentalist to say but a few.
When did you start online publication?
In the year 2006 was when I started writing for internet readers. Actually i was using the platform for personal journal & posterity after I am long gone.
How did you come to know about blogging?
It was an exciting moment when my MTC President’s wife Sister Nielson gave us a link, by the way MTC means Missionary Training Center. When I opened the blogspot, I noticed that I can equally create my own blog and I did not hesitate to do that
I know you are a blogger, but don’t know how to tag you, maybe Gossip Blogger, Entertainment Blogger or Tech Blogger.. Please tell us your blogging interest?
Well despite my many interest in other categories I will conclude that my blogs on entertainment is quite popular than others in say environment, business or politics.
Tell us a bit about your journey into the Internet world
I think I created my first email in 2000, that’s firstname.lastname@example.org, I still use it but since Yahoo is not serious with us here in West Africa, and google means business here, I use more of my gmail account. Then we browse for information to do school work you know.
I guess I just enjoyed the beautiful graphic display on the internet and how you can just access everything, knowledge was easily available. I can’t really recount all the experiences but I always love to experiment with new products online.
Is adentan.com your first website blog?
Adentan.com is my 2nd blog, my first blog is chuksineh.blogspot.com and it is quite personal and I did not care to make it known because like I said it was for personal history.
How old is your site adentan.com?
Adentan.com will be 2 years by June.
Why did you decided to start writing about Adentan & not Madina, Accra or Kasoa ?
Actually the founding of Adentan.com was motivated by the need to help the people access data about the area with ease and prepare them for the internet age.
That was the gap that I filled, you see for an area which is equally a municipal with a population of One hundred thousand people not to have a face online is not good news.
I was personally searching for an item that was only believed to be available in Accra, however to my surprise the item was later seen around Adentan after it has been purchased in Accra. So I asked myself a question: Is there a platform online where I can find everything in the adentan area? The answer was negative. So I checked up the name adenta.com but it was already taken by a German dental company, however the true name of the place Adentan was available for purchase.
Now the next problem was money, I did not have a pesewa in my pocket so I had to sell my fridge at a very low cost but the buyer too is a woman who runs a restaurant did not have money so I asked her to commit to buy it with just a token. She did not know that it was the token that would facilitate the purchase of the domain (adentan.com).
Adentan.com covers her neighbors as well, we registered more than fifteen thousand business in the area including Madina, Agbogba, East Legon, etc without discrimination. So we have our slogans as ‘Adenta and Beyond’, ‘Find everything in Adenta AND her neighbors’. Well sometimes we pick stories from other areas to teach our people a lesson but our focal point IS Adentan municipal area, and it is the name we bear.
Adentan.com has been in existence for quite some time, how much of an impact has it made to the people living in Adentan & outside Adentan
The impact of Adentan.com on the people cannot be over emphasized, 1st of all, we created employment for more than fifteen unemployed youths until we completed the 1st phase of the registration exercise.
Those outside Adentan especially even outside Ghana boast of adentan.com and it is a source of local news. I must add that the impact of adentan.com is yet to be felt because what we have done is ahead of our time and people will appreciate it as they get more access to the internet connection.
Most bloggers in Ghana are into “Entertainment, News & Gossip Niche”, what is your view on this?.
I think that as a blogger you should choose what you are comfortable in, and what you love and have great passion for. What it also means is that with so much focus on entertainment, news and gossip, there is so much room for other categories to be tapped into. So the right people will fill in the right place.
I have a friend who runs a health blog here in Ghana and I was really impressed with that. I believe that in a little moment we shall see a lot of diversification because there is a lot of opportunities online and high unemployment will cause some poeple to venture into this virgin areas and make both name and money from it.
I learnt you now operate chuksineh.com, is there any connection between adentan.com & chuksineh.com
Adentan.com is quite restrictive, many people do not know that it is owned by a Nigerian. Also when content is not about the area, the people will complain.
I needed a platform to write freely without such limitation and that was why I stared chuksineh.com which will serve as portal for expressing my opinions on matters that matter to me and can happen anywhere in the world. So chuksineh.com is different from Adentan.com
I discovered that you now do more of Video Content than Text, WHY VIDEO over TEXT?
When I was in University back home, in 2002 to be precise I started my movie company and I wrote scripts, I could not produce my film because of lack of funds and logistics. I love doing videos a lot and I have invested quite a lot of money into it too. What people see is more touching than what they read.
Tell us something interesting thing about Video Blogging?
Video blogging requires basically a camera, a youtube channel and of course internet connection. It is now that I am beginning to understand and appreciate what i really got myself into.
Video blogging requires you to capture moments and at least be sure to own the copyright to it. The rule of original content is also important here
Tell us about your YouTube Channels
My 1st youtube channel is 6 years now and has up to 1.3 million views and almost 1300 subscribers. It has 260 videos and is called Youtube.com/ckariam. I have other new channels are Youtube.com/chukscomedy which is all about comedy videos.
Youtube.com/blissfulmomentsTV and is strictly on weddings, my objective is to immortalize weddings and give friends and well wishers the opportunity to see the moments they perhaps could not witness, or refresh the minds of others that attended but help their posterity to treasure that solemn foundation that led to their existence, and finally Youtube.com/Theafricandrum which is a social commentary platform and may I use this medium to ask all to please subscribe to all these channels and help promote it.
When starting your YouTube channel, did you ever expect it to grow to where it is today ?
when I started my 1st youtube channel, I was not hoping for anything, lets say I was uploading videos for myself and associates. I was not seeking for fame or reputation but I just got addicted to it and saw myself doing more. At a point I felt that there would be a time that people will see the things that i have uploaded.
How have you incorporated social media into your writing & Videos?
Yeah youtube is a social media and works fine with other major social medias. You can connect or link your accounts so that when you upload a new video, your Facebook friends and fans can see it and perhaps consider to watch.
Also because it is automatically linked to twitter also, my followers can get to know that I have uploaded a new video as well and may act on it.
Have you ever been THREATENED for publishing story/article/videos online?
I have been threatened once by a girl who came for auditioning and decided to remove her blouse to prove she is not the timid type. People thought she actually removed her entire clothes and wanted to see more.
The video went viral and was seen in more than 279 countries in the world, the girl in question called me to remove the video that her father or brother was a military man. Another contestant later revealed that the girls act was deliberate because she told them before meeting the judges she will remove her top. The comments on the video was quite harsh and some were threatening but I was perturbed.
What are the methods you use in driving traffic to your videos on Youtube & blog?
Basically I share it to my Facebook pages and ask some friends to share as well, it does not always generate a lot of traffic. If I have small money I can sponsor the article on Facebook too.
The other and most effective way of getting instantaneous traffic to a video to embed it in an article and perhaps have big media websites publish the story. Other relevant websites can pick your story base on the quality of the video and how it soothes their convenience. Youtube also has a way of driving traffic to my videos and in my analytics, youtube is the major source of traffic.
What tools do you think will help you achieve more online if you have them?
I am trying to get a Vodafone landline to my home for direct internet, that will help me a lot. I think I have been putting together the necessary tools to enhance my productivity and with time people will witness a huge transformation in what I do. Also I will like to learn about SEO and graphic designing.
When did you make your first money from blogging and how does it feel?
I made my first money from Adentan.com last year and it was 72 Euros, infact the money came like magic and made me know that there is hope in what we are doing
Do you get funds from the Adentan Municipal or MP to run adentan.com?
I have never gotten a dime from the Adentan municipal assembly instead, we gave their newspaper department a standing fan donation as our social corporate responsibility
How did you make money from your videos on youtube?
Google adsense places adverts on the videos on youtube and when people click or watch, you are paid but the money is drops like drip.
How much did you make monthly from your videos?
The amount of money I make a month varies on the views but on the average I make $85.00 a month.
Single, Still Searching, Engaged, or Married? LOL
I am married to Amanda and we have 2 kids. My daughter is 2 years and loves to use the iPad a lot, she also a model and loves acting in front of a camera. My son is 10 months and is likely to be like her sister in loving and enjoying the internet technology age.
Any special reason for your success in blogging?
My success in blogging is because of patience, efforts and humility to learn from those who know better
Do you have any big announcements or upcoming projects you’d like to tell us about?
I am seriously interested in ALL, I mean ALL comedians who are in Ghana, either a Nigerian or Ghanaian but needs a platform to push his or her talents. They should come and we will help them achieve their goal.
What Is Your Advice/Tip for Those Just Starting, I Mean Newbie’s/wannabe bloggers especially GHANAIANS?
My advice for anyone starting is that you should do something with what you have and do not wait to have every resources to be proactive and productive.
After sometime you will measure your growth and development and will realize that your humble beginnings contributed in no small measure to you being where you are. Finally they should also consider 2 things- Small & Simple things results to Big things.
Thank You!!!! 🙂
