Think about the long-term consequences in this respect, too. You haven’t just lost the sale today, but also any future sales they were likely to make with you. If you are a service provider, then your website going down can cause issues, too, especially if your clients are reliant on client log-in sections for reports or other essentials that they need for their own operation.
This leads on directly from the last point, but is a much bigger problem. If your website doesn’t work one evening, it is unlikely that internet users are going to remember you as the business whose website didn’t work once, but as the business whose website didn’t work when they needed to use you.
Your name will then go into every conversation about non-responsive websites or those that do not work.
Long Periods or Regular Downtime Can Harm SEO
If your site is down for an hour or two, your SEO and search rankings aren’t going to be affected. However, if your site is down for a period of days – as it might be if you are moving servers and it isn’t going well – or your site goes down for an hour a day, every day, then there is likely to be some impact.
While there might be some slight positives and opportunities from a website going down, in the main it is a disaster you need to avoid, and you should do everything you can to ensure you avoid it.
