If you want to keep your followers on Twitter then there are some things you should avoid at all costs.
Many people do not even realize that they are making these mistakes and cannot understand why their follower count is not increasing and why they are losing followers. If this sounds like you, don’t panic, you can still gain back some of the followers you lost and even get more followers if you know what to avoid when tweeting.

Over Use of Hashtags
Hashtags are meant to be a way to get a trend started or to follow a current trend. Twitter tells you which trends are the hottest and when you use these hashtags your followers are interested in what you have to say. One huge mistake that tweeters make is using too many hashtags when tweeting.

There are so many hashtags that there is simply no room for good quality tweets. Remember, you have only one hundred and forty characters that you can work with and if all the characters are filled with hashtags your tweet won’t make any sense. Stick to using only one or two hashtags to get your point across or to start a trend.
Avoid Negative Posts
The best way to lose followers is to avoid negative posts about anything. You never want to come off as negative because most people will drop a negative tweeter quickly.
Who wants to constanty read about how bad something is or how poorly you are feeling all the time? Nobody, unless you paid for your Twitter followers, the people who follow you do not care about all that negativity. Also, the point of your tweets is to get them retweeted and nobody is retweeting negative tweets. So keep things light and positive if you want more followers. Just a quick tip, tweeting about humorous situations or uploading funny pics is a sure way to get retweeted.
Being Self Absorbed
One of the biggest things to avoid on Twitter is being self absorbed. Many people make the mistake of only posting about themselves, their highlights and lowlights of their life. Yes, it’s wonderful that you are taking your third vacation of the year and everyone wants to know what you have eaten for every meal, but not really. Certainly you can make these types of tweets when you’ve an exceptionally good meal at a restaurant and you want to offer the restaurant some free advertising, but you don’t need to post about every single bite of food you put in your mouth nor do you need to tweet about every aspect of your life.
Knowing what tweets to avoid is a sure fire way to gain more followers and to not lose those who are already following you. Be interesting, stay away from the negativity, don’t over use hashtags and above all, don’t be so self absorbed that people get bored with your tweets.
